Epoxy Primer On Concrete And Cement Floors

For a perfect finish on an epoxy or polyurethane floor, a correct surface is essential. By treating the substrate properly, you ensure that the substrate is already prepared as much as possible so that the next layer adheres well and can be applied cleanly while minimizing the consumption.

In addition, floor coverings do not adhere directly to concrete or cement due to their fillers. Epoxy floor primer is a thin resin that penetrates well into concrete or cement and makes concrete waterproof after the epoxy cures.

Determine What Epoxy Floor Primer You Need

When your floor is dry, and the concrete is at least 4 weeks old, you can use the Dry Surface Floor Primer. If the floor is slightly damp (not wet!), Use the epoxy floor primer for wet surfaces. If the concrete floor is extremely smooth, for example, with a tile or a concrete floor, use the epoxy primer for smooth floors.

Cleaning And Preparation Of Concrete Or Cement

Once you have the right materials and you can get started, you need to clean the floor. Vacuum the floor so that it is free of dirt and dust. Also, take the edges off the wall if you want to process them as well. Then glue the parts that need to be separated with adhesive tape.

Mix The Epoxy Resin

If the floor is clean, you are ready to make the epoxy primer and then apply it to the concrete floor coatings. With epoxy, it is important that the resin and hardener are thoroughly mixed in the right proportions, as this largely determines the cure.

Check the packaging received with your order. You need epoxy floor primer A (base) and B (hardener). Component A is delivered in a bucket. Add component B to this bucket and mix the resin for at least 2-4 minutes with a spiral mixer, mounted in a drill. It is important to scrape the bottom and sides of the buckets well while mixing.

The treatment time of the primer depends a lot on the quantity and the ambient temperature. So it’s usually best to work with at least two people. Make sure the primer is processed quickly after mixing or is broken up into smaller buckets. The resin hardens much faster in larger quantities.

Pour And Dispense

In this step, you can work better with both of you. You pour a small amount of primer into a mixing cup. This primer can be applied with the brush on the edges of the floor and in places where the roller cannot go. This work can be done by one person, while the second person takes care of large areas.

After mixing the epoxy floor primer, it is important to spread the resin over the floor. You can do this by pouring the contents of the buckets on the ground. Do this efficiently so that you can distribute the resin all at once on the floor. Is it a bigger area? Then do it in several parts. Divide the resin and spread it out. Make sure you don’t pour too much resin on the floor. You need to take into account about 500 grams per square meter.

Once you have spread the resin from the bucket on the floor, it is important to unroll it with the fleece rollers. Spread the primer crosswise and iron in whole strips and in one direction. In this step, it is advisable to wear shoe soles (with old shoes) and a disposable item everywhere so that you can walk with the nail soles on the floor. Due to the nail tips, you don’t need to glue up where you walked.

Larger floors can also be primed by pouring in the primer, then distributing it with a floor squeegee. This can be done by pushing the squeegee diagonally in front of you, pushing out a wave of squeegee primer. This way, you can distribute the primer left to right and right to left. Then roll across again and roll in one direction.

Curing And Finishing

After applying the primer all over, remove any masking tape, and the primer should cure for about 8 to 16 hours at 20 degrees. At colder temperatures, a little longer, and at higher temperatures, a little shorter. Are you going to use epoxy flooring over the primer? Then, it is recommended to apply it within 48 hours in order to maintain an optimal chemical bond.

Once the primer has cured, you can continue to repair any cracks or holes or level the floor. If this is not necessary, you can immediately apply the epoxy flooring.
